Art Exhibition at BBHS Mission to celebrate 2015 UNESCO International Arts Education week

This year UNESCO International Arts Education week was celebrated between Monday 25th and Sunday 31st of May, 2015.This year’s theme is: Arts Education for Sustainable Development. This is the fourth edition; children from around the world explored topics such as: biodiversity, climate change, cultural diversity, poverty reduction, gender equality, health promotion, sustainable lifestyles, peace, and water sustainable urban development.

To mark the week, BBHS Mission organised an Art exhibition which has been on since Thursday 28th of May and ended on Monday 8th of June, 2015.

On Tuesday 26th of May, the Art teacher of BBHS Mission, Prince Olusegun Adeniyi was invited on OGTV’s programme, NEW DAWN/OTUN OJO to provide the Nigerian populace with rich arts education content during the celebration. Olusegun Michael, Adeniyi is an award-winning Arts Educator. He was nominated for the Global Teachers Prize in 2014; also in 2014, he was awarded the Eminent Award for Innovative Teaching by the BBHS Old Boys Association (the Eminent, 1979-84 set), awarded Distinguished Merit Award by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation where he was member of jury for its 2014 Art contest for Lagos state secondary school students; he got the Most Outstanding Teacher award of the 2012/2013 Academic Session at the Baptist Boys High School Mission; in 2013, he was TNJ Africa 40 Under Forty Achievement Awards honouree; and in 2010, he was awarded the Most Innovative and Dedicated Staff award of 2009/2010 Session,  at Anu Olu Int’l College, Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Here again at the celebration of the UNESCO International Arts Education week, Mr Adeniyi organised an Art exhibition to showcase his students art works which ranges from paintings to photographs and crafts. The core of his mission as an art educator is to provide a platform for every child to experience the beauty and the rewarding experience of engaging in the art. It does not matter if the experience ends just as a hobby, a career, or simply as an appreciative observer. He is committed to the cause of inspiring and championing the next generation of artists, art lovers and creative future leaders. His goal has always been to increase young ones’ motivation, awareness and understanding of the arts.

Part of the attractions at the exhibition in BBHS Mission, Abeokuta was the Recycled Collage balls produced by the boys from the Nigeria’s last election political posters. These posters are now considered waste because the elections are gone, but here at the BBHS’s Art studio, they have been turned into a beautiful art works. There were also paintings on the exhibition produced by the boys. There is also in display a 100 x 60 inches huge portraiture of President Buhari.

Other interesting parts of the exhibition are the photographs on the showcase. Photograph is a work of art that we have used to preserve the most valued possession of BBHS; its history. Imagine if the picture of the likes of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Dimeji Bankole, Gbenga Daniel and a host of others were hanged on the school walls for the current boys to view, definitely it will have a profound positive impact on them.

Photographs are priceless treasures, worthier than a rare diamond, which are to be cherished and preserved, because they tell our stories far beyond any verbal tale could accomplish. Every picture on exhibit tells a story, the stories of how far we have gone, our accomplishments, and landmarks achieved for the next generation of BBHS boys and beyond to see and draw inspirations from. The pictures captured where we are coming from, where we are and help us to project a beautiful future.

The president of OBA, Prof. Adenekan was at the exhibition and many other dignitaries.
